Therein lies the problem, as both companies seem to have staked a claim on ‘QNED’, which leads to the obvious result of legal action. Aside from the sniping that is par for the course between these tow competitors, LG has filed an application to trademark QNED in Korea, the US, Australia and Europe, with Samsung doing the same. At least in Korea it seems LG was first, filing on September 7, 2020 with Samsung filing between September 25 and 28, according to Korean trade press, but the initial battleground looks like it might be Australia, where applications from both parties are already under review and Samsung is recruiting a new in-house lawyer. As CES (January 9) is where many brands unveil new products, it looks like there will be a quickly escalating battle over the potential trademark
In reality these are two very different TV technologies, although that will likely make little difference to consumers who will decide on a far less technical basis which is the better of the two, but battles between LG and Samsung have been going on for years, with each disparaging the other’s TV prowess. Usually it has more to do with ‘slanderous’ statements made by each, but in this case there is a very visible appellation at stake. Hopefully the artwork for the labels have not been sent to the printer yet as it seems this could take a while to sort out…
