Samsung Display (pvt) is expected to begin selling foldable displays to Chinese smartphone brands this year, marking the first time it has sold such items to other than parent Samsung Electronics. The company has targeted 1m units to be sold to unaffiliated customers with production expected in 3Q. SDC is expected to be producing two types of foldables for outside customers, with one similar to the Galaxy Z-Flip configuration (compact vertical fold) and one similar to the Galaxy Z Fold configuration (full horizontal fold). Samsung Display has been sampling foldables to potential outside customers since they began commercial production, with Huawei one of the more promising clients until US trade sanctions against the company made it impossible for SDC to supply same without violating the prohibitions and risking restrictions on its own products. Two of the smartphone brands owned by BBK Electronics (pvt), Oppo (pvt) and Vivo (pvt) are among those expected to be releasing foldables this year using SDC displays. There are some Chinese OLED panel producers that can produce relatively limited quantities of foldable panels currently, but at a bit over 10m units to Samsung Electronics and 1m to outside brands, SDC is by far the only producer of foldable displays that can be considered a mass-producer.
