Struggling panel producer Japan Display (6740.JP) has decided to pull in the closing of its Mobara fab that was scheduled for March 2026.  As we have noted previously, the Mobara fab is being sold to Japan Display’s largest shareholder Ichigo Asset (2337.JP) as part of a refinancing deal (https://scmr-llc.com/blog/another-try).  The original plan was to transfer some of the fab’s equipment to the company’s remaining fab in Ishikawa and to sell some to China’s HKC (248.HK).  It seems those plans have changed and JDI will no longer be transferring the Mobara equipment to Ishikawa, a result of its decision to exit the smart watch panel production business, including its supply to Apple (AAPL).  The company will build inventory before the closure, which we assume will be at the end of this year, in order to fulfill production obligations.  Japan Display is still looking for partners to re-enter the LCD panel business as a fabless supplier and to promote its eLEAP photolithographic OLED process.
